'What? Freedom Is,' a depiction of civil disobedience in America. Referencing a history of protest by Black Americans determined to live free of racial discrimination. A legacy well documented in songs about freedom. Nina Simone's recordings of 'I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free,' and  Why? (The King of Love is dead) influenced my process while composing this piece. I arranged Colin Kaepernick and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as bookends to illustrate the cost of peacefully speaking truth to power.  It was important for me to represent various forms of protest in this painting and reflect the universal desire to effect moral change in this country.  Petition, sit in, march, boycott, and striking out against  oppression as it is legal protected by the United States constitution.
